Vale Rock Star

10 August 2009

This touching story was written by Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre client, Marion Good, on the death of her beloved horse Rock Star.

"Rocky was on one of his regular spells but something was wrong.  With enormous effort, Sandy [Lucas] brought him home to the stable up the hill which he knew so well.

"The vets came in the darkness of night to search in vain for any sign of vision in his remaining eye but I already knew... I'd known for a while that Rocky had gone blind but his trust in those he knew made it hard to believe.

"I held his magnificent head in my arms and he gave me all of its weight.  He was tired and he knew I'd help him.  My arms shook under the strain as he was scanned.  I held him for so, so long...

"For the first time ever, Rocky allowed ME to make a decision as up until now he'd always been the one in charge.

"He spent his last night happily eating and receiving an endless stream of visitors. So many tears were shed from so many people as he'd touched so many lives in his 23 years.

"Finally and when I was alone with him, I whispered some words from a Jeff Buckley song that was swimming in my head called "Last Goodbye" "... just hear this and then I'll go, You gave me more to live for, More than you'll ever know... This is our last embrace... But must I dream and always see your face...?" - Yes.

"Rocky was euthanased painlessly, respectfully and with dignity the following dawn.

"I will never get over my Rock Star, nor do I ever want to. I believe he is somewhere and we will meet again. He was a strong, dignified, gentle and breathtakingly beautiful horse.

"My heartfelt thanks to everyone at CPEC for their love and support - it has been of great comfort to me.

"Life goes on and I am grateful for mine being so enriched by being owned by Rocky. So don't rest in peace my Rock Star, knowing you as well as I did, you'd hate it. Kick up those bar heels and flash those spots! You always knew you were one handsome devil!"
